COST AT A GLANCE

What You Pay for TMS at Village TMS

TMS is priced as a course, not a single visit. A standard course is usually 30–36 sessions over 6–9 weeks; your psychiatrist sets your schedule. The number that matters is your share of the whole course, and for insured patients that depends mostly on the per-session copay and any deductible left for the year.

With insurance, most patients pay $0–$50 per session. If you're paying yourself, ask us for current self-pay pricing and we'll explain exactly what it covers before you commit. Flexible self-pay plans are available.

A course covers more than time in the chair: your psychiatric evaluation, the motor threshold mapping visit, daily treatments delivered by trained staff and your psychiatrist's oversight throughout. There are no anaesthesia, recovery-room or medication costs attached to TMS itself.

WHAT AFFECTS YOUR COST

Three Things That Change Your Price

Two patients at the same clinic can pay very different amounts. These are the main reasons.

YOUR PLAN

Deductible, Copay and Coinsurance

If you haven't met your deductible, early sessions may cost more until you do. After that you pay your plan's copay or coinsurance per session. Our free verification spells this out before you start.

YOUR PROTOCOL

Number of Sessions

Because cost builds per session, a longer course costs more in total. Your psychiatrist sets the number of sessions, and insurers usually approve a set number at a time.

YOUR NETWORK

In-Network or Out-of-Network

We're in-network with Aetna, BCBS, Cigna, United, Empire BCBS, Oxford and Medicare. If your plan is out-of-network, we can support you in claiming reimbursement for part of the cost.

INSURANCE CRITERIA

What Insurers Usually Require for TMS

Each insurer writes its own medical policy, but most look for the same things. Our guide is TMS covered by insurance? walks through what major insurers and Medicare ask for in detail.

A Diagnosis of Major Depression

Coverage is usually for major depressive disorder confirmed by a psychiatric evaluation, often with a standard symptom score such as the PHQ-9.

Antidepressants That Didn't Help

Most policies ask for a set number of antidepressant trials at an adequate dose and length, or medications you couldn't tolerate. The number varies by plan.

Talk Therapy

Many plans also want to see a trial of psychotherapy alongside medication.

Approval Before You Start

Coverage is approved before treatment begins, usually for a set number of sessions. If a request is denied, we'll go through the reason with you and talk about next steps, including an appeal.

Not sure you meet your plan's criteria? We'll check for free.

WHY IT COSTS WHAT IT DOES

Why TMS Costs What It Does

Each session uses specialised FDA-cleared equipment and trained staff under a psychiatrist's supervision, and the effect builds over many visits. That's why the price reflects a full course rather than one treatment.

When you compare options, count the whole picture. TMS has no anaesthesia fees and no recovery time, and you can drive yourself, so there's no ride to arrange and no lost day of work. Spravato is given only in a REMS-certified setting with at least 2 hours of monitoring and no driving until the next day, and IV ketamine also means a ride home.

Whether TMS is worth it depends on your situation. If antidepressants haven't helped, it's worth knowing your real cost before ruling TMS out. Send us your insurance details and we'll give you a number.

No Anaesthesia Fees

TMS needs no sedation or anaesthesia, so there's nothing extra to pay for.

No Lost Workdays

Sessions take about 20–30 minutes, and you can go straight back to work.

No Ride Needed

You can drive yourself to and from every session.

Check Before You Start

Confirm your deductible and session limits with us first, so nothing surprises you later.

TMS Cost and Insurance: Common Questions

Straight answers about paying for TMS in New York.

How much does TMS cost per session?

With insurance, most of our patients pay $0–$50 per session, depending on their plan’s copay, coinsurance and deductible. If you’re paying yourself, ask us for current self-pay pricing.

Is TMS covered by insurance?

Usually, yes. Most major plans cover TMS for major depression once their criteria are met, typically including prior antidepressant trials and prior authorization. Read is TMS covered by insurance? for the details.

Why is TMS expensive without insurance?

Each session involves specialised FDA-cleared equipment, trained staff and psychiatrist oversight, and a course runs to many sessions. The price reflects the whole course rather than a single visit.

Is TMS tax-deductible?

It can be. The cost of diagnosing or treating a medical condition, including TMS, counts toward the medical expense deduction if you itemize, and only the part above 7.5% of your adjusted gross income is deductible. See IRS Publication 502 or ask a tax adviser.

Can I use my HSA or FSA for TMS?

Generally, yes, because TMS treats a diagnosed medical condition. Check with your plan administrator if you’re unsure.

Does Medicare cover TMS?

Medicare covers TMS for depression when medical necessity criteria are met. We accept Medicare and can check what your plan requires.

Will insurance cover a second course of TMS?

Many plans will consider a repeat course if the first one helped and symptoms have come back. Criteria vary, so we check your plan before booking.

What if my prior authorization is denied?

A denial isn’t always final. We’ll look at the reason with you, see whether more records would help, and talk through an appeal or other treatment options.

How does the cost of TMS compare with Spravato and ketamine?

For insured patients, TMS at $0–$50 per session usually costs far less per visit than IV ketamine, which is off-label, rarely covered and typically $400–$800 per session. Spravato is FDA-approved and more often covered than ketamine. See Spravato treatment in NYC and the comparison table above.
